Q. Are you related to Sacha Zaliouk or the Lerner family?

No. I find Sacha’s life interesting and do not mean any disrespect in making this blog. I like his art style and also love history, researching and compiling information (so a blog seemed logical…).

Please refer to the purpose and context page for more details.

Q. How did you discover Sacha Zaliouk?

I was researching artwork in French media for a thesis on colonial exhibitions. I came across La Vie Parisienne and Le Sourire when searching through the most popular magazines of the period.

While looking through the art, I saw a piece by Sacha and became interested in his background. When I finished my thesis, I continued to look into Sacha’s art and life. As mentioned above, I noticed some galleries cited information that didn’t align with the archives I’d been looking at, and it went from there…I took notes and decided to put it together in this blog.

Q. Can you authenticate a piece of artwork alleged to be Sacha’s?

No, I am not qualified in any way to authenticate a piece by Sacha. At most I could say if I have seen it anywhere on an archive (e.g: Gallica) but I will not be able to verify any work or tell you if his signature is 100% legitimate.

I am not an art historian, never formally studied art, and don’t claim to know anything more than what anyone else could learn via Google where it concerns specific art styles/movements/time periods. I emphasise this answer so strongly because I respect Sacha’s work and legacy and leave that to curators/art historians who know best!

Thank you for your understanding.

Q. Why haven’t you updated Sacha’s Wikipedia page with the information presented in this blog?

I tried – well, I made some changes, and then another user reached out to me to explain that I should use specific sources, preferably secondary sources rather than the primary sources that I tend to use. I decided to only add Sacha’s Cyrillic spelling to his Wikipedia and remove any other changes.

I only have a few secondary sources (like Susak’s book, but this book cites the same article I use for Sacha’s arrival in Paris in 1910, which is his own writing from an article in Paris Montparnasse – please see ‘Arrival in Paris‘ on the main page for more context.)

So, I can’t cite per Wikipedia’s conditions, but I am actively updating my own sources and hoping perhaps I can add a line or two eventually. I don’t want to cite incorrectly or disrespect the site’s rules/user etiquette. Therefore, I stick to my own blog and my own way to explain where I source information!…

Q. Are there any images of Sacha?

I have a post here where I detail all and any images of Sacha that I have found.

Q. You haven’t answered my question here – can I email you?

Yes, of course. Please see my contact page.
