Alice Prin was born in Châtillon-sur-Seine, Côte d’Or. An illegitimate child, she experienced great hardship while growing up. Her beauty, though, led her to become a life model for artists. She adopted the name Kiki and became known as Kiki de Montparnasse. Kiki was multi-talented, gifted at painting, and she eventually wrote her own memoirs (for which Ernest Hemmingway and Tsuguharu Foujita wrote the introductions).
